St. Maarten...the Dutch side.......St. Martin...the French side
A fact so charming, it always has to be mentioned first: The island of Saint Maarten-Saint Martin is the smallest land mass in the world to be shared by two different nations. Only 37 square miles are owned by France and the Netherlands Antilles.
The French territory covers about two thirds of the island and is technically a part of Europe and the European Community. The Dutch side is a member island of the Netherlands Antilles and part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, but not considered European territory. There is no real border, just modest monuments and signs. The island is known as an almost perfect holiday environment; beaches and nightlife are spectacular, shopping and dining the best in the Caribbean.
To get a feel of the area covered by St. Martin, multiply 6 miles by 6 miles. You got already 36 square miles... But not to worry, this is the biggest small island in the world. Without visiting, its impossible to imagine the variety of landscape, cultures and entertainment to be found here. St. Martin just doesn't FEEL that small... Its central mountain range provides for a rugged and interesting terrain, with winding roads up and down the hills, through small villages and still plenty of untouched land.
The Caribbean's largest lagoon is the Simpson Bay Lagoon, landlocked with the exception of two narrow channels with draw bridges. The Lagoon is large enough to have a real sail and is home to a giant fleet of yachts, which are either berthed in one of the luxury marinas or anchored in the sheltered waters. St. Maarten has become the yachting center of the Caribbean, home port to some of the world's most outrageous megayachts.
St. Martin is the ultimate micro cosmos, home to residents from over 90 different nations. The island broke out of the Antillean group of third-world economies and societies and became the exiting, active, bustling economic center of the Northeastern Caribbean. To be sure, there are problems associated with its rapid growth, but there are also stunning success stories to be told.
One is the Concordia Agreement: The Dutch and the French side agreed more than 350 years ago that residents of either side of the island can be commercially active on the other side without any Red Tape or border difficulties. This contract of peaceful coexistence turns out to be the oldest active, undisputed treaty on our planet! St. Martin entered the "Big Time" during the Eighties when investor friendly policies on the Dutch side lead to a rapidly developing tourism industry. The French side soon followed with special tax incentives for French citizens to invest into tourism and charter boats.
Surrounded by the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, with several uninhabited islands close by, you haven't experienced St Maarten - St Martin without a day on the water. Take a sailing catamaran yacht for a snorkeling adventure, or visit our famous neighbors Anguilla or St. Barths by boat.
One of the island's unique geographical features is the huge, landlocked Simpson Bay Lagoon, where several boats are offering cruises in totally calm water - no chance to get seasick here, even for the most sensitive stomach. Enjoy a sunset cruise, or explore the island's nightlife with a 'bar crawl'.
Take sailing lessons on a competent, little 24-footer, or rent a power boat for the day to explore the island's coast line and remote beaches.
Para-sailing, Kite Surfing, Scuba Diving, Golfing, Mini-golf, Bowling... the possibilities to be entertained are endless in St Maarten/St Martin. In this section, we will feature items which don't fit well into other categories or are a bit special.
Para-sailing: The best spot is Orient Beach, where several operators wait with their fast boats to tow you on a parachute high up into the air, where you will have a sensational view of the coast line.
Golf: The 18 hole golf course at Mullet Bay is open to the public. There is a mini-golf facility in Cole Bay (Simpson Bay), close to the Paradise Casino.
One of the highlights to be visited is Loterie Farm in the mountainous center of the island. This private nature reserve features the only intact tropical forest system on St Martin, with two hundred year old mango trees (pick some fruits in season) and the tallest palms. There are guided hikes through the forest, showing you traces of the former sugar plantation, with fascinating historical information about the harsh life of the slaves working here before, about the herbs used during these days for medicinal purposes and much more.
Loterie Farm is also home of 'The Fly Zone': Zip lines connect the huge trees and suspended above the ground, you will 'zip' with amazing speed from tree to tree. There are obstacles, such as rope bridges to be mastered. Completing the track can take up to two hours and is a real work out. Great for adults AND children above the age of 8 - 10. For the little ones, there is a special 'Little Tarzan" course prepared. Instructors will explain procedure and equipment and monitor the safety of all participants. The Fly Zone at Loterie Farm requires reservations.
