Mazatlan, one of the most important ports on the Pacific coast, is located in the southern region of the state of Sinaloa, 212 km (131 mi) southeast of state capital Culiacan. The climate is warm with an average year-round temperature of 25º C (77º F). Known as the Pearl of the Pacific because of its beautiful beaches and its abundant marine life, it has become an important site for international fishing tournaments such as the Bisbee’s Billfish Classic.

This destination combines traditional architecture in its Historic Center, known as Old Mazatlan, with modern hotels and restaurants in the Zona Dorada, a 10 km (6 mi) strip with beautiful beaches such as Playa Norte, Playa Gaviotas and Playa Venados. These areas are ideal for surfing, diving and sailfish or marlin fishing. In Old Mazatlan, you can visit la Catedral de la Inmaculada Concepcion (The Cathedral of Immaculate Conception) and walk down beautiful streets lined with 19th-century constructions.

Here you will also find natural treasures such as el Cerro del Creston, where you can do ecotourism outings and go rock climbing. At Creston’s peak you will find a lighthouse, which is the world’s second tallest (only the one at the Rock of Gibraltar is taller). You will also find fantastic golf courses with ocean views. For boating enthusiasts, Mazatlan has two marinas that offer docking and maintenance service for all kinds of boats. Among the cultural and sports events that you can enjoy in the port town are: The Jesus Arnoldo Millan International Golf Tournament, the Grand International Tennis Tournament, the Mazatlan Cultural Festival, the Sinaloa Arts Festival and the world famous Mazatlan Carnival, a weeklong celebration that takes place in February. During this event, floats pass by the main avenues and plazas. What’s more, you can dance in the streets to the beat of drums into the wee hours of the morning.

ECOTOURISM

Mazatlan is a destination where you can observe an abundance of plant of animal species thanks to the excellent weather conditions that permit the development of rich and varied ecosystems.

Cerro del CrestonLocated 2 km (1.2 mi) south of the port of Mazatlan, near the sportfishing boats. At the top of this hill is the world’s second tallest lighthouse. Nearly surrounded by ocean water, at the foot of this hill you can observe mollusks and small fish that are brought into tide pools by the high tide.

Las Tres Islas Located 3 km (2 mi) west of Mazatlan. An Important symbol of Mazatlan, this group of islands consists of Pajaros, Venados and Lobos. On this group of islands the region’s flora and fauna are protected, making it an important ecological zone.

Rancho El VenadoLocated 10 km (6 mi) north of Mazatlan’s Historic Center. This is an excellent place for hiking and observing flora and fauna; it’s home to more than 30 animal species, including white-tailed deer, coyotes, woodpeckers, crab spiders and many others. You can go on a hike for two to four hours with experienced guides.

                                                                  FISHING

Mazatlán has long been one of Mexico's most popular sportfishing destinations.   You can go after the many favorites of sport fishermen, Sailfish, Marlin, Dorado, Wahoo, Grouper and Yellowfin Tuna.   If you should happen to catch Dorado, Wahoo, Tuna or Grouper, ask your about having your fish prepared, while it is still fresh, at one of the local restaurants.  The fleets are somewhat spread out in Mazatlán, the older Marina del Crestron is located near the lighthouse, in Mazatlán harbor.  The newer marinas, El Cid and Marina Mazatlán are located at the northern end of the Golden Zone.  It is always best to call first.
